Canned coffee has been my best friend this past week as I catch up on what I missed while I was at ICON. Not only have I been catching up on assignments, but I've had information interviews, meetings, and I had to change my graduation plan.
The assignments and meetings are going smoothly. My only problem with the meetings is the time they take up, and if we're being honest most of these meetings could be an email. I am mostly caught up with my academic assignments I just hate all of the group work I have to do. In strategies and campaigns, it's good because I don't think I could take on a client by myself. But, in my other classes it's annoying because no one ever wants to get together to work on stuff and we end up getting everything done last minute.
I had an information interview this week with Olga Wilson who I met at ICON. She is so sweet, amazing and insightful. I loved getting the chance to talk to her and ask her about international relations and communications. She has also offered to extend our relationship past our interview and she's helping me revise my resume and work on my elevator pitch! I am so happy I chose to step outside of my comfort zone and make a new connection at ICON.
I also have another information interview coming up next week with Lindy Noel, a media relations professional from the Columbus Blue Jackets. I've been thinking about wanting an internship with the Blue Jackets for a while, but I hadn't had much luck when trying to look online for information. So, I decided to go on LinkedIn and look up communications and public relations professionals who work for the Blue Jackets. I saw Lindy's page and decided to connect with her and send her a message. I didn't get a response during the first week, but she did accept my invitation to connect. Then, Tuesday I sent her a follow up message and she responded within the next couple of hours. One thing led to another and now I have an information interview with her next week!
I'm trying to buckle down on making good connections because I recently changed my graduation plan and will be looking for a job next year. I found out earlier this week ONU won't be offering any Spanish courses after the Spring semester. Because of this I can't get a Spanish minor which would have given me enough classes to stay in college for all four years. While I could try to stretch out my remaining courses over five semesters, I know I would get frustrated and regret not graduating early. I am nervous though because this means after this semester I'll be halfway done with college. It also means I have to double down on practicum next semester which is something I am definitely not prepared for. Aggie since you're reading this, I want to warn you I will be in your office all of the time next semester and there will probably be tears.
